On paper, global girl group “Katseye” is nothing particularly remarkable, the idea of assembling members from different countries into a single group has been a well used formula for years. Long before Katseye, entertainment companies have used multilingual releases and border breaking lineups to capture broader audiences and capture multiple audiences at once. Katseye stands out from this, as they don’t merely follow the blueprint, they market themselves to be relatable, global and individualized.
From the very beginning, Katseye has been a multicultural group, with members from Korea, the Phillipines, India, Switzerland, and the USA. Their multicultural approach allows them to escape the confines of one singular market and being forced to expand outward, but instead already start popular everywhere on the map. Their formation was also through a documentary, and through social media, leading to intimate and personal interactions which cultivated parasocial relationships between the viewers and members. The audience was not simply invited to view the final product, they watched the formation as it happened.
In addition, their often shocking and provocative music gains traction on social media, which leads to more clicks and streams. Their hit song ‘Gnarly’ was extremely controversial, and at the beginning was widely considered the end of their career as a girl group, due to its vulgar language and harsh sounds. However, as time went on, the song was played so extensively on the internet and became such a viral meme that it grew on people. Repeating this formula with their recent single ‘Internet Girl’, primarily a line of a baby saying ‘I’m getting out of here’, and sexual innuendos with the lyric ‘Eat Zuchinini’, the song was a recipe for internet virality, and from there more success.
Finally, Katseye are more than just a girl group, they’ve become influencers through their consistent livestreams and pushing content. Every time there’s a trending audio, Katseye is the first to join in on the trend, resulting in a massive amount of viewer engagement through likes and shares. In addition, throughout just the past year, through charming and hilarious live streams and interviews, Katseye has gained many viral clips which make their circles on the internet. For example, Lara Raj’s “Yes!” meme has become so popular that it is used for many in their day to day lives.
Katseye isn’t just a girl group, they are well thought out and carefully marketed influencers that happen to release above average music for the entire world to enjoy.
