Usually, running away from your problems is not the best course of action, but in some cases, that is all that can be done. Yonigeya, also called “flight-by-night” arrangers, are Japanese professionals who help their clients escape domestic violence, loan sharks, stalkers, gangs (boryokudan), and other desperate situations. In one night, they swoop in and take their clients away like Prince Charming in real life, helping desperate people to restart their lives.
The Yonigeya are detectives, actors, movers, and advisors all in one for their customers. Each mission can cost from $2,000 to $20,000, depending on the risk, distance, and complexity.
This all starts with a phone call request. After extensive background checks and familiarizing themselves with the situation—to make sure their clients aren’t lying and that their operation still stays within the law—the yonigeya mission is in motion.
For particularly dire circumstances, where the customer is held under 24-hour surveillance, the yonigeya act as window washers or other appliance workers in order to assess their customer’s situation.
Although the yonigeya used to be closely associated with suffocating debts and loan sharks, most of the yonigeya clients nowadays are fleeing abusive relationships or stalkers. In a single night (or other times of the day), in as short a span of time as 15 minutes, the client is transported out of their town and far away from their past lives. Commonly, clients move to big cities like Osaka and Tokyo because there, it's easier to disappear amongst the crowds and harder to trace.
As the customer is whisked away, the yonigeya make quick work of the client’s belongings/furniture, packing up as much as possible, and moving them out. The client usually only leaves with a couple of personal belongings in a small bag while everything else is left for the yonigeya to gather. Only a letter is left behind to ensure that no missing person case will be filed by the locals, and the local police are made aware of this situation prior to the disappearance.
This intricate and risky mission is carefully plotted and carried out in utmost secrecy.
Each case differs based on the customer's needs. For most customers, what the yonigeya service provides is a year or two of time in order to rebuild their lives and financial stability. However, there are cases where customers completely disappear and don a new identity entirely. This is a much more complicated matter, where clients are confined to laboring jobs that don’t require identification and must avoid most legal situations that’ll dredge up their past lives.
The yonigeya might just be the embodiment of “not all heroes wear capes.” Their job isn’t the safest, and they may have to face physical violence when it comes to the boryokudan or other abusive figures. And yet, they continue to whisk people away from treacherous situations with incredible efficiency and secrecy.
The chance to start over is so rare to come by in life, but the yonigeya have continuously provided that opportunity for the Japanese people.
