As the mad dash of college application season in America rolls to an end, it’s replaced by a slow trickle of decision letters that are met with screams of joy or bitter disappointment. College acceptance is often seen as a prominent line that separates childhood and adulthood. Every summer, many students around the world sit in anticipation and fear, whether from waiting for a shiny letter of acceptance or the sheer uncertainty that college represents—the entering of society alone.
Contrary to how America’s decision letters are delivered through black text on a white computer screen, with pixelated confetti animations, universities in China have taken acceptance letters to a whole new level. Acceptance packages have become a place to showcase the unique nature of each school, blending creativity, culture, and design.
This past year, many universities have really outdone themselves, going viral on social media for funny, quirky, valuable, or simply insane designs.
In acceptance packages from The Ocean University of China (OUC), future students can find a small blue pendant filled with seawater taken straight from Antarctica. This pendant reflects the philosophy of the university, where students are encouraged to venture and explore the world.
The Jilin Agricultural University went ahead and made their acceptance letters “edible.” Students from the College of Mycology handcrafted every letter from a type of special mushroom mycelium paper developed by the university’s research team. This quirky and deeply innovative approach reflects the university’s pursuit of sustainability and creativity.
The Renmin University of China’s acceptance letter arrives in the form of a book that lights up as it fans open. Beautiful illustrations rendered in traditional Chinese art styles adorn the book lamp. Renmin University’s package reflects its long-standing legacy, as well as its dedication to illuminating the path for others.
Harbin Institute of Technology’s (HIT) approach is any space lover's dream come true. The package comes with a piece of heat-resistant material taken straight from an actual spacecraft. What’s even more awe-inspiring is the second, intangible part of the package. HIT invites new students to share their life goals and aspirations, promising to bring those wishes into space the next time the university launches a spacecraft.
Additionally, in 2024, the Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) printed its admission letters on innovative 0.2 millimeter carbon fiber composite material, producing an incredibly sharp and durable letter. BUCT’s acceptance letter isn’t just an accomplishment to frame up, but it doubles as a kitchen knife that can slice watermelon, mince meat, and withstand fire.
China’s acceptance letters serve as a wonderful commemoration of the sweat, tears, and soul that students have poured into education. If the much-awaited college acceptance letter has already arrived in your mail, congratulations! If it has yet to arrive—from China or America or any corner of the world—don’t worry too much, what is meant for you will come in due time.
