In 2005, George Lucas released the third movie of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Revenge of the Sith. 20 years later, theaters are re-releasing Revenge of the Sith to celebrate this milestone. Fortunately for Lucasfilm, Revenge of the Sith is far more popular now than it was during its original release, where diehard Star Wars fans turned their backs on the new prequels because they disliked the storytelling and acting. Now though, the Star Wars prequels have gained popularity and fans are finally recognizing them as works of cinema.
These movies followed the original Star Wars trilogy, first released in 1977, A New Hope. George Lucas began the Star Wars saga with the fourth movie because he does not like writing beginnings. Instead, he was able to jump right into the action and plot of the movies without having to create an elaborate backstory that would have to be covered in a very short amount of time. This also allowed for major plot twists, like Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa being twins, or one of the most famous plot twists of all time, Darth Vader being Luke Skywalker’s father. The original trilogy came out at a time where the mediocre writing was aved by the pure imagination of George Lucas’s story and the new methods of visual effects and CGI used in the films. Unfortunately, the prequel trilogy lost its sense of a “new story” and was judged on its writing and style.
When the first prequel movie, The Phantom Menace, premiered, it was a bust among fans, although still being a major success. The following movie, Attack of the Clones, was less of a failure but still was deemed far less successful than the original trilogy. When Revenge of the Sith was released, it was a major box office hit, but the critics’ reviews and audience opinions were very mixed. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the film, the protagonist, Anakin Skywalker, joins the dark side of the Force and is ultimately defeated, becoming Darth Vader. Critics were harsh with their opinions on the abruptness of Anakin’s shift to the dark side, and many people saw the acting as “wooden” and unconvincing. Reviews like this affected some actors’ careers, like Hayden Christensen, who took a short break from acting and was harshly criticized by fans in public.
However, given time, the Star Wars prequels gained lots of popularity and support. The initial problem with the movies is that they were immediately compared to the original trilogy, and people’s expectations were far too high. Now, people’s expectations have dropped, and when compared to the non-George Lucas Star Wars sequels, they shine as masterpieces. The re-release of Revenge of the Sith is expected to be a major box office hit, outcompeting new releases during early screenings on Thursday, April 24.
I just watched the Revenge of the Sith re-release at AMC 14 in Saratoga, and as an avid Star Wars fan, I was overwhelmed by the theater experience. While the movie is available on multiple streaming platforms, watching it in the theater is far more entertaining and gives the audience an experience that most of them missed out on. I was able to see a movie in theaters that was released before I was born, and it was one of the best movies I have ever seen in theaters. The movie will only be in theaters for about another week, so if anyone wishes to see it, they must purchase tickets asap. I strongly recommend watching the film in theaters, especially to people who are not major Star Wars fans.
